Makiko Haraguchi, Miko to her friends, has been living on her own since her parents were killed by one of the violent summer storms that roll through the area. She learned basic farming techniques and has a small underground home where she uses salvaged grow lights to keep herself fed. She found an empty building near the river, and took nearly a year to hollow out a large enough space for herself and her possessions, of which there are few. At one point, she found a dog-eared magazine from just before the Outbreak that talks about lockpicking, which she has gotten quite skilled at. In fact, it is how she got her grow lights. She broke into a Curator settlement and took them.
Miko is extremely resourceful, and manages to feed not only herself, but a few of the less competent people in her neighborhood.
